When God describes the characteristics of love in 1 Corinthians 13, He uses the word agape.Īgape love is patient and kind. When God commands us to love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves, He uses the word agape. The New Testament uses agape love over 200 times. Agape love is pure and selfless it is a choice of the will, desiring and striving for the best for the one loved, and expecting nothing in return. It is a love from soul to soul, flamed into fire by the Holy Spirit. We are friends with God and with other believers, but we also have this different level of love. This is the love of God for us, of God for Christ, of us toward God and toward other believers. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”Ī fourth type of love in the Bible is agape love, which is described in 1 Corinthians 13. God loves even those who don’t love Him: “While we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son.” (Romans 5:10) He expects us to do the same: “ Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” (Luke 6:27-28)ġ. God’s love for us, and His expectation of our love for Him and others, includes self-sacrifice.Īfter all, He loved us so much He gave His only Son!
